vivo

As one of the leading technology brands, vivo has officially launched the 2021 vivo VISION+ Project. Guided by the brand spirit of “Human Delight” this initiative aims to encourage the joint creation of images, public education and the exploration of aesthetics, which has always been supported via vivo’s imaging capacities. As a creative partner of the project, Le Passage was honored to join together with vivo to produce integrated communication strategy and core creative materials for the project.

Through the three newly launched short films of VISION+ project, from both technical and artistic perspectives, vivo aims to encourage the creative spirit and artistic expression and to inspire more users to embrace the joys of creativity. This year's VISION+ master films are interpreted by two internationally acclaimed photographers, who are also the judges of The VISION+ Mobile Photo Awards: British documentary photographer Martin Parr and Chinese portrait photographer Xiao Quan. These film unfold how the two photographers document the people and the scenery in Bristol and Shanghai respectively.

Martin Parr has been taking pictures to express his relationship with the world for over 50 years, while Xiao Quan is best known for his portraits of Chinese cultural elites born in the 1950s-60s. Having spent the last few decades shooting with professional cameras, the two photographers were offered an opportunity to do street photography and document their daily lives with vivo phone. From camera to cellphone, what different would it be as for their shooting subjects? Could the photos from their phone “cameras” still show their unique styles?
In an era of mobile images, everyday users could be as common and active as masters. This is the massage we intend to convey through the two films. To unleash the influence and natural appeal of the two masters, and to show our audience the joy of mobile photography, we interviewed the two photographers about their creation experience with vivo phone and documented the whole creating process. "Everyone is a creator" is not only a slogan emphasized by the brand, but also a real expectation of the cellphone manufacturer to “Create Together” with their users around the world, from everyday users to professional photographers and videographers.

The People and Scenery in Bristol
Since Martin Parr has been documenting ordinary daily lives of people in public spaces, “space” became naturally the core of this shooting in his hometown Bristol. To choose locations, we used Martin's past work as a guide. We have searched outdoor spaces such as parks, piers and outdoor cafes near the Martin Parr Foundation, which is also his workplace, because in these open spaces, the photographer can approach people more naturally and capture their true selves as they relax and unwind.
As a resident of Bristol, Martin Parr also recommended some unique local places for the film, such as vintage stores and porcelain stores, which possess a strong sense of everyday life. During the shooting, the photographer's local perspective is showed through his interacting with local residents, which added an intimate sense to this film.

Shanghai in Memory

For Xiao Quan's short film, the script used his personal vision of Shanghai as the pivot while retracing "memories" and conversing with "the present”. From his youth as an aviator overlooking the Bund, to his later career as a photographer slash cultural elite who traveled through the streets of old Shanghai, Xiao Quan's memories of Shanghai have become physical images added upon the current urban landscape.
Today, the ferries on the Huangpu River carry not only citizens and tourists, but also take-away workers who represent the new era; the Peace Barber Shop, which has been open for decades, attracts now not only the old customers, but also many young people who try to experience its retro-modern styling aesthetics.
What has been changed by urban development and what has been remained are together reconstruct the intimate relationship between people and landscape. Xiao Quan watched and shot ordinary people who are in this landscape where the old and the new are blending, expecting to add historical and cultural layers for each frame.
Differences × Everyday
In terms of visual language, we focused on the core of "Documenting the Everyday Life" and tried to create an atmosphere in the film. As the two masters are roaming the streets of the UK and China, although their surroundings are different, they create a very similar atmosphere: a daily, ongoing, and everyday life familiarity.
The narrative of everydayness not only echoes vivo's brand slogan "Everyone is a creator", but also encourages users to brace the joys of everyday life. Further more, it calls on more people to join the VISION+ Mobile PhotoAwards 2021. The contest creates an image space which provides a creative and emotional communication between users and the brand for the former to pick up their cell phones and document vivid moments in everyday lives.
